What Is In-Home Pet Photography?

An in-home session is exactly what it sounds like; I come to you and photograph your pet in your home or in your backyard.

For a lot of cats, this is ideal. They don’t have to travel, deal with carriers, or be put into a new environment. For dogs, it can also be a lot more relaxed, especially if they’re anxious, older, or just more comfortable at home.



The goal is simple: natural photos of your pet without forcing anything.

Working with cats and dogs

Cats are often about patience. I’ll usually let them set the pace; whether that’s exploring, hiding, or eventually deciding I’m allowed in their space. It's definitely all about patience with a cat. It's okay if they don't want to get near me or fully come out, I will accommodate their needs first and work with them. There is never any forcing an animal to do what they do not want to do.

Dogs tend to be more interactive, but even then I don’t push poses or commands too hard. I’d rather wait for natural moments than force something that doesn’t feel like them or put them in a stressful mood. Even if the dog needs some more space, I will adjust where necessary.



Every animal has different needs and temperaments, and that’s the whole point of doing this at home. This is their safe space, nothing new except for me and my camera taking is slow.

Why in-home sessions work so well

A lot of pets behave differently outside their environment. Some get nervous, some shut down, some get overly excited. At home, you see the version of them you actually live with. This is the version you will always remember, the slow moments at home, resting, being silly and calm.

How an In-Home Pet Photography Session Works

Step 1 — Planning Your Session

• Quick consultation
• Discuss pet personality, lighting in home, and goals

Step 2 — Setting Up the Space

• I bring a simple mobile studio setup (if you choose this option)
• Can use natural window light or controlled colorful lighting depending on the vibe
• otherwise, just tidy up the space as you would like, have their favorite things around and let your animal do their thing! (even if thats mostly lounging)

Step 3 — Letting Your Pet Lead the Session

• No pressure posing
• Breaks when needed
• Treats, toys, and patience-driven workflow

Step 4 — Capturing the Moment

• Focus on personality, movement, and connection
• Cats often photographed in natural lounging spaces
• Dogs often photographed in interaction-based moments

How to Prepare for Your In-Home Pet Session

Before the Session

• Give pets time to relax before I arrive
• Reduce overstimulation (especially for dogs)
• Inform me of your pets behavior to new people

Tips

• Open blinds or curtains if you can
• Have treats or favorite toys nearby
• If there’s a room with nice natural light, we’ll probably start there
• Clear small distractions if needed (optional)

How the session works

When I arrive, I will greet your animal with you, get them used to me and casually take photographs as they start warming up to me and the camera.

From there I will either begin the session, or start the set up with my travel studio depending on what you have chosen.



Lighting + setup options

I can work in a few different ways:

• Natural light only – using windows, doorways, and whatever light your home already has
• Simple studio setup – a clean, minimal backdrop and controlled lighting
• Colored studio lighting – if you want something more creative or stylized
• Lifestyle approach – just photographing your pet moving naturally through your home

There’s no strict timer

I usually say sessions are about an hour, but I don’t treat it like a hard cutoff.

Some pets are ready immediately. Others need time to warm up, especially cats. If we need more time for them to settle in, that’s completely fine. I’ve had sessions where the best photos happened 10 minutes in, and others where it took a slow buildup before anything really clicked. Both are normal.
