As a photographer based in the Hudson Valley, I’ve found that New Paltz offers something truly special. Nestled between the mountains and filled with artistic energy, this town is more than just a scenic backdrop—it’s a place where creativity thrives, where collaboration feels natural, and where the intersection of queer identity and small business creates a vibrant, supportive network.
A Creative Hub Rooted in Community
New Paltz is home to SUNY New Paltz, an institution known for its strong arts programs and passionate student body. As an alum of the BFA program, I know firsthand how inspiring it can be to study in this environment. Now, as a working photographer, I have the privilege of collaborating with the next generation of creatives—whether they’re studying photography, design, or filmmaking.
Right now, I’m working on a longer-term documentary project with a group of students in the Digital Media program. They’re creating a short film about my experience as a queer photographer, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to be part of this process. During a recent photoshoot segment, I had the opportunity to showcase my skills while also engaging with the students, (Image 1 above and last 2 images at the very end) sharing insights into the realities of a creative career. Being able to support and mentor emerging artists is something I deeply value, and I love that this project allows us to learn from one another.
A Safe & Supportive Space for Queer Creatives
New Paltz has long been a progressive and LGBTQ+ affirming space, making it an ideal place for queer artists and small businesses to flourish. As a queer photographer, I’ve found that working here means being surrounded by a community that not only respects but uplifts queer voices. From student-run creative projects to local LGBTQ+-owned businesses, to Nightlife Drag Shows, there’s a strong sense of collaboration and mutual support. I have been apart of this scene since 2018-present.
I'd like to highlight one of those specific businesses; Chroma, a queer-friendly and all-inclusive salon that I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside—and will continue to collaborate with in the future. Chroma isn’t just a salon; it’s a space where self-expression is celebrated, and that ethos aligns perfectly with my approach to photography. Whether through branding portraits, creative collaborations, or community-driven projects, I love working with businesses that prioritize inclusivity and individuality.

I also frequently capture queer weddings, and work on creative campaigns that celebrate self-expression. There’s an authenticity here—an understanding that representation matters, and that art plays a crucial role in shaping how we see ourselves and each other.
Endless Opportunities for Artistic Growth
The Hudson Valley is known for its stunning landscapes, but New Paltz offers more than just natural beauty. The town is filled with galleries, pop-up art shows, and creative events that bring together artists from all disciplines. From exhibiting my work at BAU Gallery to participating in community-driven projects, I’m constantly inspired by the level of talent here.
As someone who also dabbles in videography and visual storytelling, I’m always looking for ways to expand my skill set. Working on this documentary with the Digital Media students has been a reminder of the importance of staying open to new creative opportunities. Watching them develop their storytelling skills, experiment with different filming techniques, and bring their vision to life has deepened my appreciation for the collaborative nature of the arts.
Full Circle Moments & Looking Ahead
There’s something deeply rewarding about coming full circle—going from being a student in the SUNY New Paltz BFA program to now working alongside current students and sharing my journey with them. Being a photographer in New Paltz isn’t just about taking pictures—it’s about being part of something bigger. It’s about fostering connections, sharing knowledge, and contributing to a creative ecosystem that values both artistic growth and inclusivity.

Whether I’m collaborating with students, capturing the essence of a queer-owned business like Chroma, or simply walking through town and feeling inspired by the energy around me, I’m grateful to call this place home.
